Last week we had a young apprentice in our Commelius office. He’s still not sure what he would like to do when he grows up, but he was keen to find out what it’s like to work in London and learn a few things about professional environment. To his surprise, after spending a week working for different divisions in our company, he discovered a few things about himself which now will help him choose his future career path. What Jack learned during this work experience is an important part of becoming an adult – after all, finding out want you don’t want to do for a living is as important as discovering what you would like to do in your life.
Jack’s work experience story
Hi, my name’s Jack Smith and I’m 15 years old and go to Great Marlow School. Our school has given us the opportunity to go and work somewhere for the week. We could either let the school organise it or we could organise it for ourselves. My dad works at Commelius, a training company, so I asked if I could spend my week here.
I have really enjoyed my week at Commelius as it has given me a real understanding on how training organisations work. There are various parts of the company and I have worked for a few of its different divisions and took part in what they do.
I don’t mind that – researching interesting stories
On my first day at Commelius I came to the office in London and did some research for Aneta – the Marketing Executive. I was tasked to find interesting and recent stories relevant to what the company does. I enjoyed this task as I learnt lots of interesting stories along the way, for example that many people across the country lack IT skills essential at work.
The most enjoyable task – eLearning
The next day I went to Bath with Vicky who is responsible for the e-Learning part of the business. Here I got to test the e-Learning by using it and listing any problems for the designers to fix. I found it very helpful and useful as it was much more engaging and exciting then any other learning products I have used in the past. I also got to sit in on one of Vicky’s meetings with her team in Bath.
Learning who you don’t want to be
My least favourite task was on Wednesday where I went to Weybridge to work in the finance part of the business, where I was filing for the majority of the day, despite not enjoying it so much it was still a great experience and I’m now certain I don’t want to be a clerk!
On Thursday I had a task set by Sam, the Business Development Manager, where I had to find phone numbers of a list (very long list) of different companies, which require training so he could speak to them. This was a very tedious and long task! I also sat in on another meeting that Vicky and Aneta had. This time it was about marketing plans.
A good experience is a learning experience
I’m very glad I had the opportunity to work here as I have learnt a lot from being here in just five days. I’ve a much better understanding of what a full days work is like and what it consists of. I’ll miss working at Commelius and I’ll be back at school soon. However, as I have been commuting to the office in London I have been getting up at 5:30 – I’ll certainly not miss that!
